Who Votes for a War?

A war is coming.

Or so they say. Tensions between Iran, Israel, Europe and the US are building. At the moment it remains a war of words and rhetoric, but if Iran is attacked, for whatever reason, you can be sure that either Russia or China or both will retaliate.

This could start a third world war.

China and Russia are strong economic partners of Iran and will protect their interests. Israel,America and the west seem determined to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons (despite there being no evidence as yet that Iran are developing them – although Iran is reported not to be cooperating), and Iran seems to enjoy taunting the west with jibes about their nuclear ambitions.

Note that when I name these countries, I am not talking for the people of the country. Iranian people do not want a war and some think that their president, Ahmadinejad, is the George Bush of the Middle East.

The people don’t have a say in these matters. It is the politicians who take us into a war. They start the fights and reap the profits of defence and construction contracts, while we suffer the bloodshed and destruction. Yet we fall for it time and time again.

We put up with it when they went to Iraq. Those who hadn’t been brainwashed into the whole WMD farce marched in our cities demanding that the war didn’t happen. When it did, we gave up. We should have fought harder, but the war didn’t really affect us here. We watched the news in outrage but in the end we could turn it off.  So we let it continue.

Now, the war is coming to us. When it is happening in our own backyards, we won’t be able to turn it off. We didn’t start it and we didn’t want it, but we will not have a choice when our so-called leaders to steer us into oblivion. But we have nobody to blame but ourselves, as it was us who gave them the power in the first place.

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor
